Job Description

Job Purpose: The purpose of the Clinician/Peer Counselor is to perform a complete Behavioral Health assessment onsite at the selected hospital location for patients in mental health and substance abuse crisis. Assessments to be conducted at bedside in the ER and Medical Units. The Clinician/Peer Counselor will provide individual face to face screenings and assist hospital staff in identifying patients that would benefit from treatment within Aspire’s continuum of care. The Clinician/Peer Counselor will collaborate with the Behavioral Health Nurse on site to complete a biopsychosocial evaluation including using SBIRT, PHQ-9 and CBT. A Recommendation for treatment for each individual patient will be made in collaboration with the hospital interdisciplinary team. The Clinician/Peer Counselor will coordinate processing referral through placement and transfer with the Nurse Navigation Team.


Other essential functions are:

  • Coordinate the development of the discharge plan and recommended level of treatment based on the Behavioral Health Assessment conducted at bedside.
  • Provide substance abuse and mental health treatment resources to clients and assist them in setting up aftercare services within our continuum of care as well as non-Aspire programs for patients not transferring directly to an Aspire unit.
  • Complete appropriate documentation and screening tools based on patient assessment.
  • Provide compassion to patients in crisis and use motivational interviewing techniques.
  • Develop professional relationships with non-Aspire providers to help assist with transition services and referrals.
  • Counsel clients individually to assist them with modifying behavior and overcoming substance dependency.
  • Review patient history including past services received and assist in identifying obstacles in success of treatment.
  • As authorized by the patient, assist family members present with understanding the Mental Health and Substance Abuse issues and the proposed course of treatment. Answer questions, educate and provide support.  


Most importantly, all functions must be completed while maintaining high standards of ethical and professional conduct while adhering to agency policies and procedures.

Job Requirements

Position qualifications: Ability to receive and maintain a(n)

  • Level II Background clearance
  • Acceptable Motor Vehicle Registration driver’s license record in accordance with the underwriting guidelines set by Aspire’s insurance company as described in the AHP Corporate Transportation Policy 3.9.1
  • Masters level and licensure in Mental Health counseling.
  • Minimum one year of substance abuse or related work experience preferred.
  • Peer in long term substance abuse recovery preferred.


Other qualifications: Requires understanding of addiction behavior, prevention and behavioral modification techniques and related social, psychological, health issues and related counseling techniques and practices. Requires complete knowledge of the organizations related programs, practices and policies as well as rules of documentation and confidentiality.
